I received my sample of your block paving sealer and when I tried it I was amazed because it is exactly what I have been looking for. I have tried many other sealers which were no good. I cannot wait for my order to come to get started. Thank you so much.

By Gary Morris

First time I've tried this block paving sealer and a few years since I last treated the drive. Its's not the cheapest, but it performed exactly as expected. The blocks do look darker (perhaps more uniform colour??) with the sand in between hardened and the surface very waterproof with water beading, whereas I didn't have this before. The surface does look more 'silky' than the 'dusty' appearance it had before. I would use this again but as with all product, preparation is the key (jet wash, re-sand and dry completely & it does smell quite strong but not as bad as other products I've used. I did apply two coats as per instructions.

Excellent service. The 5 litre can of sealer was in my home less than 2 days after I ordered it. I was very critical about surface preparation before I started. The block paviours on my patio have been down for at least 30 years. The sealer went down easily but with a high toxic smell. Superb improvement.

Technical

Application

Smartseal Block Paving sealer can be applied using a sprayer unit or roller, at a rate of 2.0m2 per litre (pavers) 1st coat & 3.5 m2 per litre 2nd coat. A two-coat spray application is required to fully cover the jointing sand. The sealer will be tack free within 2 hours at 20C and foot traffic may be permitted after 4 hours. Vehicles should be kept off the sealed area for a minimum of 24 hours at 20C. These times may be increased or reduced depending on the ambient temperature. During the curing cycle, protect from rain. Do not apply when the ground temperature is above 23C or below 12C. All equipment should be cleaned with Smartseal cleaner fluid after use.

Deicing salts should not be applied directly on Smartseal block paving or concrete sealers. Salt chemically reduces the temperature at which water freezes and will result in water ingress into the concrete. Subsequent freezing may result in the concrete seal being broken by the expansion of water as it freezes and white pitted areas may become visible.

NOT TO BE USED ON CLAY PAVERS

*** If your Block Paving has been previously sealed - to ensure compatibility, please contact us here before ordering: https://www.smartseal.co.uk/help-advice/contact-us.htm

Preparation

New block paving or cobble stone paving should be swept clean, ensuring there is sufficient well-compacted sand in the joints. Existing paving should be pressure washed to remove all surface debris. If the area is contaminated with weeds & moss then it should be treated with Smartseal Fungicidal Wash. Oil and other stains should be removed using Smartseal Cleaner / Oil Remover. The treated area should then be left to dry and the joints re-sanded & compacted to the lower edge of the paver chamfers with clean kiln-dried sand. Moisture in the paver & sand will inhibit penetration of the sealer and produce whiteness.

Technical & Test Data

Smartseal Block Paving sealer has been tested by the TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) and certified that it meets the SRV (Skid Resistance Value) for all categories of paving for local authority pedestrian areas and when heavily trafficked is suitable for special applications where risks of skidding are high as laid down in the UK Highway Authorities Tender Specification. Copies available on request.

Specification Clause

Newly laid block or flagstone paving shall be treated with Smartseal block paving sealer to protect and stabilise jointing sand and enhance surface colour and increase abrasion resistance. All materials should comply with ISO9002 for Quality Assurance. All work should be carried out in conjunction with the manufacturers current technical data sheet and instructions for use.

Product FAQs

Q: I'm going to use a sprayer to apply your Acrylic Block Paving Sealer, either matt or Silk, haven't decided yet. QUESTION - How do I clean the spray bottle and nozzle after the application. Is it white spirit etc.

Steven Fitzpatrick

A: Hi Steven, We have a cleaner designed for this exact purpose called Tools Cleaning Fluid. https://www.smartseal.co.uk/application-tools/application-tools-cleaning-fluid.htm You keep re-cycling the cleaning fluid; it can be used up to 30 times; after that point you would actually have a thin sealer because of the resins then present in the cleaning fluid.

Response from Josh

Q: If I order 25 litres will it come in 5 litre cans or one 25 litre can? I'm a little concerned about how to transfer from can to sprayer, which would be difficult to do from a heavy 25 litre can!

Jim Cook-Martin

A: 25L is one single container. You could always (for example) tip some into a bucket and fill your sprayer from there. The container does have a 'easy pour' spout, but intially is quite heavy. Hope that helps.

Response from Nigel

Q: Hi the forecast today is bright and sunny and no rain but the max temperature is going to be circa 11.c. My drive is south facing and exposed to the sun for at least 8 hours. Can I apply the sealer as this is below the recommended temperature? Is the issue that it will take longer to dry out or something else?

Andrew

A: It should be fine to apply the block paving sealer in the temperatures you have described. The general rule is that the lower the temperature, the longer it will take to dry (cure). This will not effect the performance of the sealer once it has fully cured.
